In any region there's 8 gyms you can compete at to earn badges. 8 badges get you into the region's league competition! I have 7 Sinnoh badges right now. If you're a coordinator, you enter your Pokemon in contests. Contests are designed to show off a Pokemon's moves with style and beauty. If you win a contest you get a ribbon. 5 ribbons lets you enter the region's Grand Festival, which is like the league competition for coordinators.
