[Smoker's got a brief reprieve from being one super handsy Nico Robin, though honestly, even he doesn't expect it to last.]

Yeah? What'd you find kid?

[Ikki smiles, amused that Smoker won't even try to guess, then again he's sure he couldn't guess it so...]

A girl! Not just any girl but the girl that I will make my bride when I'm older! Her name's Kotomi and she's the cutest girl I've ever seen, she's not noisy or annoying like all the others and even when she gets sad she doesn't whine loudly like the girls at the orphanages. I know where she lives too, so when I return and find Shun I'll go and stay with her a bit, and when I'm older I'll go and pick her up so she can be my wife.

[He has it all completely planned, oh yes.]

[Smoker just FLAT OUT has to bite his lip hard to keep from laughing. So it's probably a good thing he's not in Robin's body. Between abusing it with smoker and the rest this would probably be bad for it. Okay, he can do this. He can just reply without laughing... he can do this.]

She sounds perfect.

[GRINNING EAR TO EAR OVER THE CIGARS.]

She is! She reminds me of Shun, but maybe even better! It's a bit of a pity she has parents, if she was an orphan too I could just take her with me and Shun right away.

[He scratches his neck.]

But I guess that wouldn't be a good idea when I can't even get enough food for Shun. I don't want her to starve. I need to think of something, though, I want to give her something so she will remember me when we are older in case I can't visit her often.

That's okay, I think she'll be happy to wait for when you're older.

You could try a ring or something, but I'm fairly certain if she's as wonderful as you say, anything you give her with that promise she will treasure forever.

Of course she's as I say, I don't lie.

[And he has the best judgment in the world okay?]

I hope she won't find anyone else before I can go and pick her up when we're older. Specially not someone better, she is so sweet and innocent I don't think she would like if I fight for her so I wouldn't be able to compete.

[He's rummaging around he house, out of habit, trying to find something good.]

How can I make a ring?

There wouldn't be anyone better I'm sure. [Precious babies, he's not a shipper, but damn you two are so cute and he can't take it. Have a gruff head ruffle.]

You could check the item shop and see if they have something. Or you could do a paper one should could hold in a book.

[Little Ikki just gives Smoker a weird look, what are you saying, man, there are tons of guys better than he is. Probably.]

What if she meets someone who still has a family? Who doesn't have to run away each day to try to protect his little brother? Someone who can keep his little brother feed each day? Someone who is intelligent and goes to school and all? I can't do any of that, they would be better than me for sure. The only thing I'm good at is being strong.

[The kid knows his own limitations, kind of. He still considers himself strong at this age.]

But a paper one could get burnt or destroyed with water or something.

Why do you think she wants someone with those things? And you don't have to go to school to be intelligent. As long as you can listen to her read books. Let her decide what she wants and needs if you respect her so much.

[Nods his head about the ring.] A metal one then. Or something else you can keep safe easily enough. But I'm pretty sure if it came from you, it wouldn't matter what it's made of, she'd treasure it anyway.

Why wouldn't she want someone with those things? They are all good things, aren't they? Specially if they can keep their family feed and all, reading books won't kill hunger.

[And.... Just looking at you weirdly, Smoker, why do you say those things with so much conviction? How can you do that?]

How can you be so sure if you don't know her?

She can keep herself fed just fine. If anything, I think she'd try to help you and Shun if you could let your pride allow that. [Snorts quietly and strokes his chin. God he's bad at holding a bluff forever.]

It's a long story. I'm going to know her better so I'm taking things on faith. I could try to explain it better, but I don't think it'd work. Just trust me on this, okay?

But I'm a boy, I should take care of her.

[Yeah, as if he's going to set aside his pride. Never. He frowns at Smoker.]

You're still as weird as always. Even if you aren't a girl anymore.

[Waves a hand.] Yeah I know, but sorry, can't change that.

Aren't boys the ones who take care of girls?

[Well, not all boys do that but... He tries to.]

When mama was too weak to move she told me that I would have to take care of her and the coming baby because I was the man of the family.

But she took care of you too while she could. Gender doesn't matter like that. Friends, family, and people who like each other are supposed to guard each other's backs.

... Then what about those who don't do that?

They have other ways to make up for it. Everyone does what they can, what they're good at.

[Ikki thinks about that a bit before he looks at Smoker and asks, by his tone it's clear he doesn't believe it's possible but the kid still lacks the sharp edge and hate that his older self has.]

I don't know. I never met him, so I couldn't say.

Not everyone follows that sense of justice.
