[voice] A stormy question

[Hello Luceti, is the nice little ice storm distracting you from post-Valentine's woes? Don't worry, here's a grumpy marine asking questions to painfully reminds you all.]

Seeing as we're all stuck inside -- [Once again, an usually feminine voice from Smoker's journal account.] -- I've got a question for everyone affected by the event.

Are there normally lines you won't cross in relationships that the Malnosso seem to cross for you? Or do they seem to take those into consideration instead? Since they seem to know us pretty well, it begs the question whether they're using our weaknesses, or if it's completely random.

And if anyone needs help out there in the storm, let me know. This weather is good practice.

[ooc: and feel free to threadjump like the dickens. It might be the only time Smoker keeps quieter than not, seeing as he's a girl now.]

[Shrugs. He can't figure out if/why Ikki's touchy and what things to avoid.] Plus with him, we don't really care if the other hates each other because we're already on opposite sides of the law and beliefs. It's kind of refreshing. In a fucked up way.

[But Ikki's still his best friend. Rare is the person Smoker would be willing to share his space with.]

Agreeing to disagree or something like that? You could do that with the pirates here as well, or is it because he's not your prey?

Because he's Zenigata's. Maybe I should let Zenigata at Straw Hat and see what happens. [A shrug.]

Tsk. More than that, the pirates and I ... can't seem to get along. One I do, but that's a mess. And the other we keep irritating. I should see if she's still in for Poker nights though. Even if she does wind up with most of my cigars.

[Tilts her head to the side thinking it over.] I think with the pirates from my world there's the mutual understanding that anything either of say or do, we still might use against each other when it's convenient. Tends to stem off most conversations.

Well, I don't know if I would bother to talk with the Specters or the Marinas if one of them even appeared here so I can't judge. But I don't see why we would fight unless they started it.

[Though since they won all those battles there's also the factor of knowing that he can defeat them if he has to. Smoker's conflicts are far from over.]

It's complicated. Straw Hat and his crew don't want to pick a fight with me... generally. [Nico Robin sometimes did, but she has many problems with marines as they did with her, and he hadn't forgiven her for everything she did to Tashigi.] But we're hardly friends. And even the unnamed truce is tentative. Since if they step a toe out of line I'll be there to kick their asses.

Why would they do so here anyway?

[Shrugs.]

To protect a friend they declared war on the world government. They do insane things sometimes.

If it's to protect someone then I can sympathize with them. That's what I do as well.

[Though Smoker should know that already.]

Hn. I'm not sure letting the world devolve into murderous chaos is such a good thing, whatever the reasons.

I said I can sympathize, not that I think it's a good thing to do that. But I killed the God that ruled the underworld, also known as the afterlife which basically destroyed that place leaving souls with nowhere to go. Basically all of them ended in Hell though, no matter how good people they had been because Hades refused to accept any redeeming things, but I'm sure many would say that it was a bad thing to do.

No. There should be exceptions to such a thing. But the whole world isn't... [Rubs the back of his neck. Some islands are in danger, but others are like Alabasta or Drum Kingdom where a spark of revolution could be a good thing and change things that needed to be; without destroying everything good.]

It's nearly the same though, isn't it? By just saying to destroy the World Government, it's saying the government doesn't do anything good for anyone; no redeeming qualities. And I don't believe that.

I'm your friend, I've heard you talk about your World Govermment and I don't think the government does any good for anyone. It's the people who work for it and are like you the ones who do good to the world. And you would do the same even if the government crashed down, because you are a good person and you have a good sense of justice. You may work for it, you may represent the World Government but the one you represent doesn't match with the one you yourself describe so even I can see that there's something wrong with all that.

[Grunts.]

Still doesn't mean have nothing is better. If Dragon takes over, who leads then? All the countries who just fall to the strongest? That's not any better, it's three steps backwards in history. And then who would stop people like Blackbeard? The countries would be too busy working on their own infrastructures and problems or even trying to get enough resources even if they worked together.

Sometimes taking three steps backwards is the only way to be able to take the right path after you make a mistake, I know it well. As for who would stop that guy? How about people like you? It wouldn't be easy, it wouldn't be the best solution for a while, but I don't see how licking the shoes of a government that allows a handful of people act as if they are superior and treat any kind of being as objects for their pleasure is really better than that.

[Ikki sighs.]

Maybe it's not a matter to even destroy it all, just destroy the ones in charge of it now and let people who would do things better in their place. Your world is all about ships, right? If the navigator of a ship is leading it straight to stones, making it go throw all the storms there are and just gives no fucks for the actual ship so long as he and his room are in perfect state, wouldn't it be better to change the navigator to one that at least will try to make the ship go through the less troubling waters? And if the captain defends the first navigator because he's biased and doesn't care either about the ship and the crew, wouldn't it be better to change that one as well? It doesn't mean you have to sink the whole ship even if it still is a revolution.

[Long side glance and a bit of silence. It's not something Smoker can, or will argue with.]

And if in the middle of that storm, you're all surrounded by pirates on every corner and the navigator is the only one who knows how to steer the helm? Then throwing the navigator overboard will get you killed that much faster.

Don't get me wrong. I do loathe Akainu, and if he becomes Fleet Admiral, which I hope he doesn't; then it'll be a big problem. I hate the brass in general, the only one I get along with is Aokiji. But true justice means sometimes you make the sacrifice for the greater good.

I'll keep getting stronger and maybe that will take me to a better position to enact those kinds of changes. Right now I could barely touch Blackbeard in Luceti, and that was before he had Whitebeard's devil fruit and when he had none of his crew. Someone I'd be forced to say was my equal in strength fell to him quite quickly. Akainu is dangerous and untrustworthy, but unlike Blackbeard, he doesn't aim to engulf half of the world in flames. Lesser of two evils is still what it is.

There's limits. The old prison warden was jailed himself when he went over the line and started killing pirates. Of course mind you, that's someone Blackbeard broke free to join his crew.

Akainu's justice is twisted, but at least it's still justice at the root.

[Ikki just hums, clearly he doesn't think the same but... It's not his world. He has enough with his own problems, with his own world. Just because he and Smoker are friends and get along doesn't mean he can judge or give an opinion, or that he should either. Even if he thinks that he's wrong and from what he has heard Akainu sounds even worse than the other, because he hides himself under a coat of "justice", the other one is a criminal to the bone and anyone with common sense would know it and fight it. But Akainu... Well, he only has to look at Smoker, willing to accept him as the lesser of two evils even if he may as well destroy most of the world because Ikki knows that there doesn't exist anyone without sin.

But that's Smoker's problem and it's pointless to voice those thoughts or worries.]

I think it's time to take Hyoga out for a walk, do you want me to grab anything while I'm out?

[Smoker actually really values Ikki's opinion which is what makes it harder for him. But no matter who takes power in the marines or government, Smoker wants to see the most people protected and saved as possible. The most ungrateful noncombatants to still survive. The world needs less chaos, not more.]

No, I'm just going to read, and I stocked up on coffee the minute I got back.

Are you going to be okay in this weather?

Don't forget who I am. I may not have trained forever in the arctic but I've lived in a burning hell long enough so that the cold won't bother me. Even this freezing rain won't be much trouble. I won't be gone for long anyway, Hyoga probably won't be able to stand it for long himself.

There's no way she would be out in this weather. I can handle it but she would die.

You're not going to check on her either? Pity. Seemed a good opportunity for a friend to bring hot cocoa.

Why should I check on her? She lives with friends already, they can get her as much hot cocoa as she wants. Why would she need me to do so?
