I don't like the idea of forcing one person to be a sacrifice to save potentially hundreds of thousands of lives. But then again, some people don't want to change, no matter what chances they're given and they can't be forced to either.
Gold Roger, the Pirate King in my world, was executed for his acts as pirate king and to make an example of him. The government wanted to prove its might in being able to take him down, but it backfired. They were trying to get people not to follow in his steps, yet instead, it started the Age of Pirates. And then in a completely different situation, they let pirates live rather than execute them, and those pirates have gone on to murder more people than Roger ever did.
I don't have a problem with executions, if someone is going to keep on murdering and hurting people and has no desire to change, there's not much else that will stop him. It doesn't seem to work as a deterrent however.
