DEMO: Finding an Unknown Planet

"All right, all readings show highly advanced developed life, early space, we're picking up satellites, but no bases. Remember, don't start trouble. No fights, no scaring people spitless, no stealing anything. Science officers have top priority, their word is law, and try not to come down with any screwy viruses we don't have means to heal."

Smoker ran through a mental checklist and sighed. He was never going to cover everything, he'd just have to trust it would be okay.

"Tourists don't get to land until we know it's safe and they can't do anything stupid. Don't be stupid yourselves."

He raised his arm and gave the order to drop him and his bike off first.

"Let's go greet the locals..."

Skuld had been riding on her own three wheeled bike....

when she saw him coming down the road. She looked all of fifteen or sixteen, MAYBE, with odd markings on her face. The young goddess wore oversized coveralls with the shoulder straps crossed over her waist, leaving her more range of motion as she rides. Her shirt on top was a tee shirt with an image of a wrench and what could either be oil or a really accurate image of oil at the base of the handle. She also wore short white and pink fingerless gloves, and a yellow ribbon in her hair that trailed behind her with her black hair like a flag as she rode.

The bike she was wearing noticed him before she did, because its head turned to face him. She pulled herself around to see what Banpie was looking at, and whistled. "Now that's a fun looking bike..." Don't mind that calculating look in her eyes, she's thinking of about a dozen ways to take it apart. The small bead necklace she was wearing slipped out of her shirt and bounced against her chest as she thought.

"Thanks. It's custom built," he growled quietly, flicking ash off the ends of his cigars.

"Stupid question, but I've been traveling a long time, where are we?" It might also indicate whether the planet had a united government or not. Then again, she might only give him the street name. It's been known to happen to him before.

She grinned brightly. She would love a closer look. The face of the bike she was riding moved as its head did, the expression did not change, but it was clearly also studying his bike. Because why wouldn't she have a sentient bike with a face?

And of course she answered the question with the most important information he could possibly be asking for. "Point three miles from Ben and Jerry's, two miles from Hagendaz, and half a mile from Carvel." Because you totally were asking because you wanted to get to ice cream right?"

His ears flicked as the universal translator informed him they were ice cream brand names.

"How did you know I was craving ice cream?" he narrowed his eyes. Maybe the whole planet was psychic. Although... in that case she was being nice about not calling his bluff.

Because who isn't? But she gave him a bright winning smile. Usually this would be when Keiichi would put a hand over her mouth before she could say 'because I am a Goddess', but with Skuld it was always fifty fifty between that and what she actually said here... "Because I. Am. A genius." No really, it was just obvious. But also, she is very much a genius.

"I can't argue that," Smoker gave a wry grin. "All right, show me the closest ice cream shop and--" ahhh pain in the -- wait, yes, it was fine, they probably had credit machines and ATMs. It was easy enough to stealth upgrade. "I'll buy you a couple o' pints on me." A hand up. "Not hitting on you," she was way too young looking. "Just hate to eat alone." And it could be awhile before he found the others, so he needed to gather intel still.

Although it was nice to know they had ice cream here. Top priorities.

"You're nowhere near me, you couldn't reach to hit me if you wanted to..." she said, confused. Geeze, humans were weird. "But I'll never say no to free ice cream. But you said closest. Do you want closest, or best?" There is a difference. And this goddess has sent out temporary satellites which she repurposed to find every ice cream shop in a ten mile radius of the temple, and of the college.

Hit on. Flirting.

Smoker just facepalmed and refused to correct the translator. So long as it didn't get him into hot water, that was fine.

"Whichever you think is best."

Not a translator issue. Skuld was just that naive about certain things. She wasn't even aware she had a boyfriend.

She grinned brightly. "C'mon, Banpei!" she said happily, turning her bike, which was once again facing forward. And she happily, on her bike, led the way, though she was standing on the runners, rather than sitting.

"So how is your bike living? Is that common around here?" Not that he could talk once they got rolling, however.

She grinned, and patted the bike on the odd shaped head. She couldn't answer until they arrived, but that didn't take long. They made it to an old fashioned ice cream parlor with a small seating area and a very mom and pop feel. She hopped off her bike and beamed at him.

"I made Banpei a few years ago. The bike modification just seemed like a natural extension of his capabilities." She gave a bright smile as the back part of the bike folded up into the rotund body of the front and the front wheel moved up to join the rest in that form, the brace for the wheel splitting into two legs.

The robot lifted its hat in greeting, then opened the door for them. "Banpei doesn't talk, of course, but he is still good at communicating. Sigil talks but she's back home, she wanted a break and I said she could stay back and upgrade her rocket skates. I'll check her work when I get home."

The person working the register grinned. "Skuld! Your usual?"

She jerked a thumb. "Ask him, he's paying."

The woman frowned. "Aren't you a bit..." stopped, looked at Skuld and paled a bit, then back to him quickly with a forced smile. "And what will the two of you be having?"

"Nice," Smoker gave a simple thumbs up in regards to the information about her bike, and tilted his head, confused by the shopkeeper's approach and shrugged. "How much is her usual?" Okay so maybe less genius, and more prioritized ice cream as the most important thing in life. Smoker could understand that.

"She is not allowed to enter our kitchen sink contest any more. Her usual is two of those. And sometimes a shake to go."

Skuld beamed brightly. A few pints was a quick snack, but for free ice cream, she'd take what she could get, since she was saving up for those new simms and three of her mangas came out this month. Plus she kind of had to replace the jenga set, since she blew it up.

Smoker mentally calculated it all in his head and slowly nodded. "That's fine. Her usual and just a regular sundae for me. So long as you take digital," he hope the translator worked that out fine. "Or I'll need to get to an ATM."

"There is an ATM right next door, we can get started on hers while you do that, if you wish, then you can tell us what you want for yours."

Skuld was bouncing a bit at the thought of ice cream.
