Welcome to New Feathers, if you haven't heard about the Shifts or Drafts yet, I suggest you look into it. If you want to learn basic self defense I could teach you, or Chun-Li could, or any of other teachers who offer it. Normally I'd offer to teach jitte as well, but I'm using flimsy knock-offs right now because some idiot seems to have borrowed it without permission.

[And here he gives a lethal glare to the camera.] I know a pirate took it before, and I've spent all this month hunting you down. I don't know who took it, but step forward now and I'll be far more lenient than if you continue to make me wait!

[His tone suggests that "lenient" means he'll only beat the thief half to death instead of two-thirds.]

I'll be by the barracks stacking rocks. [And making a snowman. Not that he's going to admit to that to anyone. Except kids maybe.]

They would destroy all that is not like them. I have known such creatures in my own world. If it is true, then I have some sympathy at least fro our captors, if they are unfairly warred upon. But all sympathy is lost if they steal people from their homes and press them unwilling into service in their war.

Yeah, I wouldn't waste your sympathy on the Malnosso. It's more like the Third Party are against us and the Malnosso would just as soon stay out of the way.

If the Malnosso did not bring us here, there would be no war then? They perpetuate the violence by summoning ever more slaves to fight. That seems like madness.

I'm pretty sure the Malnosso don't bring us here. The world does. And the Malnosso do their experiments supposedly to figure out how to get everyone home.

[This was not a theory that Aragorn had heard. From all other accounts of the Malnosso it was they that abducted people here for their experiments.]

You believe the Malnosso benevolent, then? That they are trying to help us?

[Snorts.]

No.

They put us in the barrier so that the Third Party can't wipe us out, but they view us more like labrats than people. Besides, not everyone wants to go home, or even has a home to go to.

There are those whose homes are so terrible that they would rather be prisoners here than free men there? I suppose if I were another man I might choose to stay, but I have a promise to fulfil.

Tell me, has anyone tried to speak with the Third Party?

There are those who are dead in their timelines, so being on this world gives them a chance to spend extra time with people they knew.

Yeah, they don't get along well with "abominations" like us. You can ask around people who've been on the draft, but they really hate our existence.

If they could be made to understand that we are not here by choice, they might e reasoned with. If I wished to make contact with the Third Party, how would I do it?

Go on a draft. But they can't be reasoned with. They know we didn't ask to be here, their way of sending us "home" is by trying to kill us by removing our wings.

[He considered the other man's words for a moment.]

Can drafts be volunteered?

No. Missions can though, and they might find something useful for you.

And how do I volunteer for these missions?

Check near the back of your journal, there should be a list of what's open in there and for really big projects, they'll post a notice.
