Welcome to New Feathers, if you haven't heard about the Shifts or Drafts yet, I suggest you look into it. If you want to learn basic self defense I could teach you, or Chun-Li could, or any of other teachers who offer it. Normally I'd offer to teach jitte as well, but I'm using flimsy knock-offs right now because some idiot seems to have borrowed it without permission.

[And here he gives a lethal glare to the camera.] I know a pirate took it before, and I've spent all this month hunting you down. I don't know who took it, but step forward now and I'll be far more lenient than if you continue to make me wait!

[His tone suggests that "lenient" means he'll only beat the thief half to death instead of two-thirds.]

I'll be by the barracks stacking rocks. [And making a snowman. Not that he's going to admit to that to anyone. Except kids maybe.]

[And then out of the forest near the Barracks comes an eight foot tall brown orc in the armor depicted in the icon with an ax in hand... but also in a large cloak made of the skins of several animals crudely sewn together. He's no tailor or leatherworker, but the snow got worse while he was out there and he improvised. Right now, he's actually heading towards the Barracks with a Purpose. To see what this fortified building is like.

[Smoker looks up from swinging the much shorter and flimsier practice jitte, and arches an eyebrow.]

[In any case, the armor is a little impressive, but the height doesn't throw Smoker for a loop, he's used to a kind of crazy world.]

[There's a small young woman (at least she looks young) dressed in a heavy coat and a scarf wrapped around her head to keep her ears warm. The offer at teaching self-defense interested her - Raylene never really learned how to do much beside waving a knife around and hoping that'd be threatening enough. It usually did work, but she wasn't afraid to stick someone if she had to.

Still - that ain't gonna do her a lick of good in a draft. And she can't do much damage without fangs or claws. So. Self-defense it was.]

[She doesn't seem jittery when she speaks up to the man; but she's not stupid either - Raylene keeps her distance until she can deem him less than an outright threat.

There are group sessions and one on one lessons. The group sessions are mixes of different skill levels but there are always a beginner or two so you don't have to feel out of place for it.

I think there's little you could teach me. Though teaching those that can't fight is worthwhile. But what are shifts and drafts, I wonder?

Shifts are when things around here go crazy. Well, crazier than usual. Drafts are when people are forcibly selected at random to fight the Third Party on the outside of the enclosure.
